It's true what they say about the Bay, the second best thing about it is the weather (second only to the people who live there) But, what "they"don't know is what's truly the second thing to the bay areas people is it's views. I'm talking stop you in your tracks make you want to take pictures with your eyes views. Truth is, this almost made me cry. I don't know when the next time I'll be home is... That said, watch it and see the sea unfold.

Kanye West has been delivering a new song every week as a part of his "Good Friday" series... The picture below is from his song Runaway which he premired at the VMA's this year, the performance was fantastic, but thats old news. I bring this up today because Kanye released the Artwork for the Single yesterday. I'm really interested in his choice to use the Ballerinas for this song & I'm extremely excited to see the 40 minute music video which supposedly will premiere online any day now.

I think the classical elements of adding ballet into the artwork/performance/video theme is unusual. Plus, does she have a mustache? And thick thighs? What is up with that?! ... I'm into it.

When I came across these photos from the J.Crew Mens presentation at Milk Studios I had to share, I've been thinking of blogging the J.Crew women's collection because it's so unexpectedly on point but I simply haven't had the time to sift through the look book and gather the right photos. Photographer and overall really talented guy, Kareem Black, traveled to Hati March 5-11th and took some amazing photographs, saw what was really going on down there...

The Tan- Face Children EP: A Review

It's fitting really, that the people behind the new E.P. The Tan Face Children were inspired by the classic Walt Whitman Poem. It is clear the artists behind this music are passionate about creating something for the same Tan Faced Children that Whitman was, music that becomes tangible, music that becomes an experience more than listening. Both rapper, T. Shirt, and producer, Darvin Silva, are present in the best way on every track, from the heavily mixed reading of "Pioneers O Pioneers" to the instant classic "Monday Massacre". These boys are doing the damn thing, telling honest stories and making music that moves people. Although the story being told on Tan-Face Children has been told before by hundreds of rappers, a sort of " This is me and my boys growing up, this was our life..." Present most in the track "(Written Somewhere in Miami)" however, what makes T. Shirt and Darvin Silva's story truly solid is the magician-ship behind the production, the passion blaring through in T. Shirts rhymes, the realness in his laughter, the influence of electro-inspired beats and heaviness of a story not yet told, an unusual but now irresistible. There is honesty in this music that was previously unheard of in hip-hop, particularly in T. Shirt and Silva's ability to use the beat as apart of the emotion in the tale they're telling. The use of poetic force throughout the E.P. is strong and creates a wonderful balance: at one point you are both ready to sink deep into the melody but also, you're distinctly aware that this music was made for "Western youths, so impatient, so full of action, so full of manly pride" (As is most rap, yet this is the first time I've seen this comparison, well done.) This is what pushes Tan-Face Children to another level, the story is clear, the music is true, and the result is a powerful collection of songs that will transform the way you hear stories in Hip-Hop.

Tan Face Children EP is the first ever collaboration with The Connosieurs of Culture a media collective comprised of The Couch Sessions, Different Kitchen, and Please Dont Stare.

Preen Look Book Review

Preen is giving a lot of really great looks here, and I couldn't be happier. The individual pieces show great versatility and movement. The draping in the pants and that chunky knit sweater is completely wearable for seasons to come. That sweater is one of my favorites presented this season, I think the scalloped/ tulip effect of the silhouette is flattering on many different body times and is a great thing to consider when you're layering up and down for Fall and Spring. Personally, I enjoy this color palette: metallic black detail on that coat below is to die for, and the pale grey is refreshing after the heather grey mayhem that was the American Apparel V- Neck T-shirt (did that happen everywhere, or just NYC?). Anyways, great looks from Preen, can't wait to see more from them next season!

The rapper, actor, whatever gets picked up by Time Out to do a shoot and talk about clothing. Personally, I'm not that into what he wears on this shoot, but when I've seen this guy out and about he's always fly. He doesn't seem as flashy as his HBO character and thats fine with me, since his HBO character is named Domingo and looked a mess... I'm mostly posting it because I think what he says about cartoon characters is funny, and to support the guy a little. I want more music though.

I think this is just really beautifully written, and maybe because I've found myself in a plethora of platonic male relationships so I feel like I also notice the small things in men, notice what truly makes them men. Further, that regardless of the day or time of year (Valentines day doesn't mean a lick to me) we should all take notice of what we do for each other, it's important to maintain our ability to observe as humans. Within said observations, we can find the grace and manner that make us individuals, what truly makes us love each other. That is all.

Yo.
The transition back into New York life has been slow but steady, I'm taking everything one day at a time. While I still have some official Cambodia wrapping up to do today, the total journey is over. It's a strange feeling, to be so far removed and then BAM, so back in it. I can't be in NY and not be in it (whatever that means) and I'm finding that through the photos that my friends and I took across the world there is some calm. In the way that light looks different there, and how I can express that to people here. I'm into it, and it's really a shame because in academia there are so many issues with photography and exploitation, but really they help foster memory and transitions. At least for me, at least for right now. Enjoy.

I play with If's because I like to dream in infinite possibility, in destiny and mostly in faith in ones self. I first heard this poem I'm going to share when I was in the 5th grade, every month we had to memorize a poem and this one one of them. While I've since forgotten it I typically think of its importance right before a large voyage, of which I am about to embark. I'm relatively packed and I have my flights sorted out, the usual occurrence of falling into place has taken place, tomorrow I'll fly back to New York for 12 hours, then to Seoul, Korea and then to Phnom Penh, then a bus for who knows how long to Siem Reap where I'll be living and working for three weeks. I've never been to Asia before and I've never done any international traveling with no one I know, except for when I up and moved 6000 miles away to Paris but that doesnt count any more. Regardless, wish me luck and learning.

This video premiered last night on Dick Clarks New Year's eve special (at Midnight, Duh) and let me just say the video is hands down one of the best I've seen as far as artistic qualities and expression goes, its simply visually astounding. I'm into it and amazingly proud of Jay-Z for the PR opportunities, and the press that this gets, King of New York? I think so. All of that being said, I'm more proud for Hip Hop, taking over and with good music like this.

I think there is something truly glorious about end of year wrap ups, they always make me smile and think about good times. That being said I was pleased as punch to stumble upon this Paper Magazine collection of President Obama's stylish moments. Oh boy, while Michelle generally gets most of the fashion credit, I find a presidents style an extremely interesting part of our visual culture, considering concepts of power and how that is portrayed through clothing.

Tribal; an Interesting Turn

While I love me some African inspired tribal prints as much as the next person, It's hard for me to see these and not think about what I do all day everyday in class, think about Visual Culture and Race. So, ahem, these photos are a great editorial and a fantastic modeling, styling and makeup job by the people over at Herring & Herring for D Mag, but they scream of bell hooks dark primitive Other and I can't act like I don't see that. And maybe these photographers don't even know what Other with a capitol O is but I do and it's really kind of obviously there. If you don't know about bell hooks writing on the subject, and this is of interest to you, let me know.

I do love the colors though.

Many of you have probably seen the photos of Cudi, Drake, and Wale in GQ Magazine’s Man of the Year issue, and sure I love a spread of some good ol' up and coming rappers as much as the next cool kid, but this picture is WHACK. First of all what is the concept here? Hey check out these new rappers, they do their laundry too?! WHACK. Second im not quite understanding why Wale is even in this picture. I mean come on clearly my man J. cole is a much more learned and talented fella. WHACK. Third Drake while I must admit you look adorable you kind of also look like a china man, and I strongly suggest consulting your stylist before jumping on set in fur and sweatpants. I mean we all wish we were Garance Doré but lets face it your not. WHACK. Lastly Cudi, I know you were probably told to laugh during the shoot but you look more like you want to cut drake then chuckle about old memories. WHACK.

Dont get me wrong other than my comments about Wale I truely do love these guys and the music they create, but this photo could have been a lot better. What are your thoughts?

I found this interesting, "Diary" piece from Complex Blog about the beautiful J. Cole. I didn't know he had a lady friend like that, but the guy is super interesting and so talented its not surprising, I think the whole Jay, J cole, Pharrell, Wale tour would have been a great show if it had come to New York I absolutely would have been there. Once again with the back stage/ behind the scenes love. Im into it.

“Originally, ‘Beautiful Bliss’ was gonna be J. Cole’s first mainstream look, because ‘A Star Is Born’ wasn’t even thought of yet. It was my way of saying, ‘Yeah, this is my man Cole. He’s on Roc Nation.’” – Wale

Complex: What do you guys say to people who think J. Cole killed Wale on that record?

J. Cole: I wouldn’t say that. I got the obvious lines. His verses are still crazy if you really sit down and listen to them. And not to take anything away from my verse, because it’s definitely on point, but we’re in the day and age where niggas are so competitive and people got their favorites, that nobody wants to just enjoy it as a good song, which it is. They wanna say, ‘he killed him.’

Wale: It’s no way to not perceive it as such. He’s the new guy now. His verse is amazing. It’s like when AZ came on “Life’s A Bitch.” It’s a fresh face. I don’t stand a chance as far as perception goes, but I think they’re equally as good. Why can’t it just be a good song though? Everybody feels like they have to like one of us. Nobody was even on ‘who killed who’ 10 years ago.

..Wale has an interesting point, but the truth is the song could just be Melanie Fiona and J. Cole and Wale wouldn't be missed, at least not by me. Its a beautiful song though, you can listen to it.

I love behind the scenes stuff because I want to be behind the scenes, I knew Grace was doing H & G but I hadn't really put it together that Lady Gaga was the WITCH. Fantastic, all of that coupled with the Arts Issue of Vogue is just glorious. I love that Gaga was Anna (Wintours) Idea and I love Lily! The model playing Gretel, her red hair is fire. I want it, so badly. Red hair is hot right now.

I've been spending a vast amount of time pretending I'm Jay Z. It's a really really glorious thing I don't have my DSLR yet because there'd be way to many photos. I've been trying to recreate his album covers, I think I'll do a photo shoot as a part of my senior work on the guy... Until then.

This is fantastic. This makes me want to have a child, seriously. That wont happen, I swear on everything. But, I will be purchasing something from this collection for the nephew/niece. It's a glorious collection and looks like it was a lot of fun to shoot, totally my thing. I'm into it, love that band jacket, maybe I'll buy one and put it in a frame.

The collection comes out early november, and prices range from $14- $128 so, not so bad. It's gonna be a good fall season for clothing.

His latest photography project called ‘Super Hero’ consists of memorable political and wartime scenes from the mid-20th century featuring beloved superheros like Spiderman or Batman in some interesting and funny positions – true juxtaposition in effect.
